American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)

The American White Pelican winters along the coasts, but breeds only inland. Those birds that breed west of the Continental Divide tend to winter on the west coast, while those that breed on the east tend to migrate south and east to the Gulf of Mexico coast and into eastern Mexico. In the bay area, look for the White Pelican, in large groups, at the Palo Alto Baylands.
