SCVAS is one of the most active and successful conservation organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. We work in cooperation with other stakeholders on issues that are critical to preserving birds, wildlife, and habitat. Our Environmental Advocacy team and Environmental Action Committee (EAC) are currently working on many efforts, only some of them are listed below and at the links above.

On May 16th, 2017, Councilmember Raul Peralez (San Jose District 3) and the rest of the San Jose City Council presented Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society with a commendation for our advocacy work in engaging and encouraging the community to explore, enjoy and protect our wildlife. Our Environmental Advocate, Shani Kleinhaus, accepted the award on behalf of SCVAS. We are so proud of Shani and the rest of the Environmental Advocacy team for the incredible work that they do throughout San Jose and the rest of Santa Clara County! Thank you and congratulations!! Congratulations also go out to Sierra Club - Loma Prieta Chapter who also received this commendation.

Our work promotes the protection of native wildlife through the restoration of habitats and safe migration corridors, education programs, field trips and working hand-in-hand with other conservation organizations, local governments and corporations.

KEEPING BIRDS SAFE

• Bird-Friendly Building Design in Santa Clara Valley - We Are Making Progress! Main Article from the May-June 2017 issue of The Avocet; by Sigal Wilnai and Shani Kleinhaus

• Bird Safe Buildings Promoting buildings that reduce bird window strikes and interference with migration in the Bay Area.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

• Wind Power Working to reduce bird kills by supporting the use of properly sited wind turbines, using fewer and better-designed turbines, and supporting better management of turbine operation.

• Save Panoche Valley Supports well-placed alternative energy and opposes a landscape-scale solar array which would destroy this designated Important Bird Area of Global Priority.

ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW

SCVAS has a long history of reviewing and commenting on many California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) documents as an important means of protecting birds and their habitats in the Bay Area.
